As companies race to deploy artificial intelligence in ways that aim to make them better at operating, hiring, and competing, they're also chasing after top AI talent, including filling the position of chief AI officer. A lot of these companies, Doonan said, "can't really articulate what they want, why they want it, and what are the outcomes that they're looking for." "All I could think is that you could change the word 'cowbell' to 'AI,'" Doonan said. Without that understanding, Doonan said companies are going to hire "somebody really senior and they're going to be doing [data] clean-up for the next two years. Of course, that hasn't stopped companies from wanting to add a chief AI officer to their ranks.

While another third (32%) said they have not made the spending decision, only 13% said they would not be acquiring similar gen AI capabilities. Microsoft has pointed to customers including Visa, BP, Honda and Pfizer using Copilot, and professional services firm partners on Copilot AI including Accenture, EY, KPMG, and PwC. And even amid the hype, it's important to keep in mind that as gen AI spending grows, it is still dwarfed by companies' cybersecurity budget needs. That means roughly $5 will be spent on security for every dollar spent on gen AI. But it's growing, and for now at least, when it comes to the billions in gen AI spending, Microsoft is in the pole position.

REUTERS/Daniel Becerril/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMEXICO CITY, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Samuel Garcia, one of the two main opposition hopefuls competing in Mexico's 2024 presidential election, has withdrawn from the contest to return to his post as governor of the northern state of Nuevo Leon, his party said on Saturday. "I have decided to not participate in the electoral race for President of the Republic," the 35-year-old Garcia said in a statement from the Nuevo Leon government made public by his center-left Citizens' Movement (MC) party. Garcia then became embroiled in a dispute about who would replace him in Nuevo Leon, where his political opponents control the state legislature, which votes in the interim governor. Recent opinion polls have given Garcia around 10% support in the presidential race, putting him behind Xochitl Galvez, candidate of the main opposition alliance.

You may not know this, but Bill Nye, "The Science Guy," has professional experience overseeing new and potentially dangerous innovations. Still, computer science is not the skill that Nye thinks is the most important for students to learn. We don't want a smaller and smaller fraction of people understanding a more complex world," Nye said. During the conversation with CNBC's Tyler Mathisen at the TEC Summit on AI, CNBC surprised Nye with a series of questions that came from a prompt given to the Google generative AI Bard: What should we ask Bill Nye about AI? "It's hard to think of an area that this couldn't help," said Diogo Rau, Eli Lilly chief information and digital officer. He said Lilly already is using generative AI to write patient safety reports and clinical narratives, and ultimately, it will play a role in drug discovery. One of the most anticipated uses for generative AI is in customer relationship management, and that is happening at more companies. Others noted their firms are in the early days of rolling out code generation tools using gen AI, as well as AI "co-pilots" across many roles, and using generative AI to help make investment decisions. Generative AI could enable a more customized and pro-security posture for organizations," he said.

Many Indian startups rushed this week to open new bank accounts in India’s Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, known as GIFT city. The swift collapse of Silicon Valley Bank has cast an aspiring Indian finance center into sudden relief. India, which has long been a bit player in global finance, has a chance to boost its role—but only if it moves swiftly to rectify some regulatory barriers. This week, many Indian startups rushed to open new bank accounts in India’s Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, known as GIFT city, once they regained access to their SVB deposits. Accounts set up within the hub’s International Financial Services Center, or IFSC, are free of India’s stringent capital controls since the funds are held in U.S. dollars.

Even the skeptics of the latest hype cycle recounted during the Town Hall numerous examples of how AI is already embedded in more efficient business processes. The arrival of ChatGPT and generative AI only a few years after the hype cycle over the metaverse has attracted both the AI bulls and bears as tech pursues its next big thing. Another executive who works with lawyers and accountants said the sentiment right now is that AI is not to replace lawyers, but "lawyers using AI are gonna replace lawyers." And what generative AI does, is really help you crunch, take your machine learning to, you know, the 'nth' level of the finite level. That may also place AI in the crosshairs of ESG investors, making sure that the ethics part is part of the mission of companies using it.

CFOs learn how to respond and lead during a cyberattack

After returning to the office from an exhausting overseas trip, your CIO informs you that malware was deployed within your customer databases. CFOs from the Council were broken up into teams, each representing a fictitious company in a specific industry such as financial services, healthcare, energy, and pharma/biotech. As the scenario moved along, CFOs were given the next development or demand in the attack. Once they knew a ransomware demand was made, the most pressing question was whether they should pay the money. Others turned immediately to the participants playing company lawyers to determine how much cyber insurance they had on hand to pay the ransomware.
Nearly three-quarters (74%) of respondents said they expect their companies to spend more on new technology in the next 12 months, while 22% said they expect spending to be about the same, according to the survey. Roughly 4% of respondents said they would be spending less, compared to none in the previous survey. Cloud computing, which received nearly unanimous support as "critically important" from TEC survey respondents, will likely be the recipient of that sustained spending. Gartner expects cloud computing revenues to rise to $101 billion next year, up from $90 billion in 2021. Cloud computing is expected to rise by 20% for the next two to three years, according to Gartner's forecast.

Much of this vision hinges on Meta's $1,500 Quest Pro headset, which went on sale last month. The new virtual reality headset has some noted improvements over the mass consumer $400 Quest 2 headset model (which will remain on sale, though a Quest 3 is expected next year) — notably better sound and sensors. The Quest Pro can track your eyes and face, so your avatar can make the same faces that you do. Meta is betting that businesses, not consumers, are going to be the first big market for the Pro headset. Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive officer of Meta Platforms Inc., demonstrates the Meta Quest Pro during the virtual Meta Connect event in New York, US, on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022.
"We looked at investment twice, and passed both times," Mnuchin said at the CNBC Technology Executive Council Summit in New York on Tuesday. I did not expect it would unwind nearly as quickly, and if indeed customer funds were misused those are very serious issues," he said. "We were a bit surprised by the overall level of valuation," Mnuchin said. "You had people doing an investment a day in tech," Mnuchin said at the CNBC event. Though he added that the allegations of misuse of customer funds in the FTX case do point to a foundational principal in financial regulation.
TOKYO, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp (6502.T) on Friday cut its full-year operating profit outlook after a 75% slump in second-quarter profit - dismal results that heighten the uncertainty surrounding its prospects for a buyout deal. It cut its profit forecast for the year ending in March by roughly a quarter to 125 billion yen ($885 million). Kioxia Holdings Corp, a memory chip maker some 40% owned by Toshiba, has also said it would cut production by about 30% from in October. For the July-September quarter, Toshiba posted an operating profit of 7.5 billion yen ($53.2 million). That was far short of a Refinitiv consensus estimate of 36.9 billion yen from four analysts.
